Exploring the Coast

First stop- Montanita

After an awesome 3 hour van ride through the Andes we arrived in Guayaquil, the largest city in Ecuador. Unfortunately, there are several large slums around the city. The constrast is striking, 1st world highrise affuence adjoining 3rd world poverty. Plus the air pollution was like LA on a bad day, so we had no desire to hang there. We immediately caught the "executivo" bus, relatively new with comfy seats and headed west for the coast. After another bus change, to the local "milkrun" bus, we finally arrived in Montanita mid afternoon. Montanita is the surf mecca of Ecuador, the typical surfer, rastafarian, hang loose, party scene. The streets are dusty, sandy lanes lined with casual open bars, cafes, street vendors and lots of dogs. Unfortunately for Grey, the surf season ends in April. Winds were on shore, not much of a swell, but the water was warm. So the surf dog got in alittle mushy body surfing.
